FC Koln confirms loan of Jusuf Gazibegovic to Widzew Lodz
FC Koln has officially confirmed the loan of Jusuf Gazibegovic to Polish top-flight side Widzew Lodz. The right-back will spend the upcoming season in Lodz after the club had already hinted at the move on Friday. Gazibegovic, who had hoped for another chance at Koln, will now gain playing experience in Poland.
Why is Gazibegovic leaving FC Koln?
The 28-year-old Bosnian had shown fighting spirit in May, stating that his time at Koln was not yet over. However, the club's sporting plans do not include him. With Sebastian Sebulonsen and Alessio Castro-Montes occupying the right defensive positions and David Fürst waiting in the wings, Gazibegovic has no place in the current squad. „We informed Gazi early and transparently that he has no role in our plans for the upcoming season,“ said Thomas Kessler, FC Koln's sporting director.
Where is Gazibegovic going and what does he say?
Gazibegovic will now fill the gap at Widzew Lodz left by the serious knee injury of Carlos Isaac. The Bosnian expressed satisfaction with the solution: „Of course, I would have liked to get a chance at FC Koln, but now I'm looking forward to the new challenge in Lodz. I want to show myself from the start of the season and become a regular starter again.“
How did the transfer come about?
The transfer was already revealed on Friday by Widzew Lodz's goalkeeper, Rafał Gikiewicz. FC Koln has now officially confirmed the deal. Gazibegovic was signed by Koln in January 2025 as the first transfer after the registration ban, but rarely met the high expectations. The loan should now help him gain regular playing time again.
