Wagner reshapes training squad as FC Köln prepares for camp with new signings
After recent transfers, FC Köln manager René Wagner is reshaping the training squad ahead of the pre-season camp in Kitzbühel. With just three training days left before the July 20 test in Bergisch-Gladbach, the coach must decide who stays and who returns to the U21 side.
New signings add pressure to the squad
Since Luka Lochoshvili was the first new signing to join training, the situation has shifted. Left-back Gideon Mensah and left-winger Reigan Heskey are set to join once their work permits are secured, alongside Paul Okon-Engstler, whose move hinges on his recovery. Ellyes Skhiri’s transfer is also expected to be completed before the camp starts.
Currently, 19 first-team players and five U21 talents train together. With injuries healing and new arrivals like Malek El Mala and Yannick Mausehund joining, the group could swell to 28. Wagner said after the Rheinsüd Köln test: „If Gideon and Reigan can train, we’ll trim the U21 players in the squad.“
Which young talents still have a shot?
Alongside El Mala and Mausehund, Kristiyan Irmiev, David Fürst, Jonathan Friemel, Maik Afri Akumu and Nilas Yacobi have impressed in recent days. Wagner must now pick who joins the Kitzbühel camp. Six of the seven youngsters played against Rheinsüd Köln, with El Mala scoring and Mausehund logging 90 minutes. The coach refused to tip his hand early.
What’s next after the test match?
On Monday, the coaching staff will review the expanded squad. The Bergisch-Gladbach test is the final public outing before the team flies to camp. Wagner stressed the decision won’t come until after the internal talks. „First, we need to see who’s available when“, he said.
