FC Köln have completed the signing of Ghana international Gideon Mensah. The 27-year-old left-back arrives on a free transfer from AJ Auxerre and has penned a deal running until 30 June 2028.
Why Mensah fits Köln like a glove
FC managing director Thomas Kessler was full of praise for the new recruit. “Gideon is a player who consistently puts the team first and delivers high tactical discipline, defensive solidity and dynamism on the pitch,” Kessler said. Mensah proved his worth in Ligue 1 last season and then starred in all four of Ghana’s games at the 2026 World Cup.
Mensah brings valuable international experience. Last season in France he delivered strong performances. “He showed strong form in France last season and backed it up at the World Cup,” Kessler added. For Auxerre he made 114 appearances, including 85 in Ligue 1.
Why Köln won out over rivals
Mensah had several options after the World Cup. “In talks with the FC Köln executives, who went out of their way to woo me, I felt best from the start,” he said. The open-minded city of Cologne and the passionate support of the FC fans were decisive factors. “I’ve heard so much about the city and the incredible backing from the FC fans – I can’t wait,” Mensah added.
Mensah’s journey to FC Köln
Born in the West African Football Academy, Mensah moved to Austria in 2016 with Red Bull Salzburg and played for their feeder side FC Liefering. He went on loan to Sturm Graz, Zulte Waregem, Vitória Guimarães and Girondins Bordeaux before joining Auxerre permanently in 2022. He made his Ghana debut in 2019 and has since racked up 44 caps.
Köln are banking on the experienced international to shore up their defence and add attacking impetus. Fans can look forward to a motivated new signing ready to make an immediate impact.
