FC Köln has signed another World Cup player for its team. Midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler joins from Australian First Division side Sydney FC and has signed a contract until June 30, 2030. The 21-year-old arrives after a strong season in the A-League and appearances at the World Cup. After the last defeat against Bayern Munich (5:1 on May 16, 2026), FC is looking for reinforcements for the central midfield.

Who is Paul Okon-Engstler?

The Belgian-born Australian began his career in Australia and moved to the youth team of FC Bruges at the age of 14. Later he played for Benfica Lisbon before returning to Sydney FC in the summer of 2025. In the past season he played 27 games in the A-League and three in the cup. At the 2026 World Cup he appeared in all four games, including three times in the starting line-up.

Why is the signing important?

FC managing director Thomas Kessler emphasizes: “Paul brings football qualities, intensity and willingness to work. His development in recent years is impressive.” The player himself is looking forward to the stadium and the fans in Cologne. With four defeats in a row (LLLL), FC is urgently looking for new impulses.

Okon-Engstler will now settle in Cologne and prepare for his first Bundesliga season. FC hopes that he will strengthen the central midfield and contribute to improving the current form. The team will have its next chance to win in the next game.
