The 1. FC Köln has a new assistant coach. Kevin McKenna returns to the club and will be assistant coach to René Wagner. McKenna knows the club from his own past very well. Including shorter breaks, the two coaches worked together almost five years. From 2021 to 2024, both were assistant coaches under Steffen Baumgart. Wagner left the Geißböcke then together with the head coach. Also in Hamburg and at Union Berlin, Wagner and McKenna worked closely together. Now the way leads them together again. Kevin brings a large experience treasure through his stations as assistant coach at various traditional clubs and in the Bundesliga. At the same time, he knows the 1. FC Köln from his own past very well. His experience, his professional expertise and his personality will be an enrichment for our coaching team. We are happy to welcome him again in the FC family, says FC Managing Director Thomas Kessler. McKenna earned himself a particularly good reputation as a player at the FC. The former defender was the embodiment of will, passion and intensity. For the Geißböcke, the Calgary-born defender played 153 times, scored 11 goals, and set up three more. After his active career, McKenna became a youth coach at the FC, was assistant coach of the U17, U21 and multiple times of the professionals. Also at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the former Canadian national player joined. I'm very happy to be back at the FC. I've said many times that it's a great honor for me to play and now train at such a big club. I'm especially looking forward to working with the coaching team and the guys, says Kevin McKenna. The impact of Kevin McKenna's appointment on the further composition of the assistant coaches is not yet clear. According to information from come-on-fc.com, further talks are being held behind the scenes. Recently, the former assistant coach Lukas Sinkiewicz sparked discussions with a social media post. The former national player thanked his time at the FC. However, it is said to have been a value-free thank you so far.
