Blow for FC Köln: Sebulonsen misses season opener

FC Köln loses a key player: Sebastian Sebulonsen will miss at least four to six weeks due to a thigh muscle tear.

Sebulonsen was still involved in the first test match against Real Sociedad San Sebastian, but had already complained about pain afterwards. He was unable to play in the second test against the Spaniards on Saturday. An MRI scan on Sunday provided clarity and his extended absence.

Why it matters for FC Köln

The loss of Sebulonsen will hurt FC Köln. He was a regular starter in the last season, playing 31 league matches. However, it is unlikely that the sports director Thomas Kessler will now focus on finding a replacement for Sebulonsen on the transfer market.

What comes next?

Kessler currently has other priorities, at least when it comes to new signings. A top-six player with leadership qualities is still being sought. Several candidates have already dropped out or are too expensive. Coach René Wagner explained after the second test against Spain: „Because the personal issue is so important, we will take our time – and if the right personal issue is not there, then we can't do it.“
