FC Köln is facing a decision in the dispute over the expansion of its training ground. The OVG Münster will decide on the building plan on June 11 at 9:00 AM. The FC Köln wants to improve its training and youth conditions at Geißbockheim and expand the site. As a compensation measure, several publicly accessible small playing fields are to be created on the Gleueler Wiese in the Cologne green belt. However, this is exactly where the problem lies. For years, there has been opposition to the plans from environmentalists and opponents of expansion. They see the plans as an infringement on a green area under monument and landscape protection and criticize the sealing of free areas with the playing fields. In November 2022, the OVG Münster granted the complaint of the environmental organizations, the FC went against the decision and got right before the Federal Administrative Court. In Leipzig, the judges justified their decision in 2024 as follows: „The sealing of a small part of this overall area is compatible with its character as a green area“. The 2024 judgment relies on the fact that the OVG rejected the building plan with legally non-binding considerations. In particular, the court held the evaluation of the planned small playing fields on the green areas to be flawed and referred the proceedings back to Münster. On June 11 at 9:00 AM, a decision will be made there. The judgment in Leipzig was a partial success for the Geißböcke, but the final judgment is still pending. The milestone in the eternal dispute over the expansion is now at hand. If the OVG Münster now confirms the building plan, the FC could have taken a step closer to its goal.
